Marriage is harder than anyone told me

Real talk about the messy reality behind engagement stories and the struggle to find common ground in a fast-paced world.

I remember sitting across from my partner two years into our marriage, realizing that no amount of planning prepares you for the actual weight of sharing a life. We spent so much time obsessing over our engagement stories and the perfect social media reveal that we completely neglected to discuss how we would actually handle the mundane friction of daily living. It is easy to get caught up in the romanticized vision of a partnership, but the reality involves a constant negotiation of expectations, habits, and values.

Many of us enter this phase of life trying to balance traditional values with the pressures of modern marriage. We are told that if we find the right person, everything will fall into place, but this is a dangerous misconception. My own experience taught me that the initial spark is just the beginning. I see so many friends struggling with dating struggles where they mistake intense chemistry for long-term compatibility. Real growth only happens when you stop performing for each other and start being honest about your fears and shortcomings.

A spiritual connection was something I thought would naturally exist if we checked all the right boxes, but I learned that it is actually something you must build intentionally every single day. It requires patience and the ability to listen when you would rather argue. When you strip away the digital filters and the pressure to have a perfect relationship, you are left with two people who have to decide every morning if they are going to show up for each other. It is not always pretty, and it is rarely cinematic, but it is the only way to build a foundation that actually lasts through the inevitable storms of life.
